DESSO launches its second 'Cradle to Cradle' carpet tile

4 May 2009

Carpet manufacturer DESSO has launched its second carpet tile with a 'Cradle to Cradle' certificate with the introduction of the Torso carpet tile. DESSO has thereby taken the next step towards its aim of having a complete Cradle to Cradle product line by 2020. DESSO already introduced the Pallas carpet tile to the market earlier this year. "This new tile will result in increased possibilities for our customers to opt for a sound product and we have taken an important step towards our 2020 objective", according to Stef Kranendijk, DESSO's CEO.

It's very important to constantly come up with innovative products in this current economic climate. Sustainable enterprising is an essential part of this and is now a continuous focus point. "We have further strengthened our core values with regard to sustainability with the introduction of our second tile, which also satisfies the Cradle to Cradle conditions", Kranendijk states.

Cradle to Cradle takes both time and effort
The Cradle to Cradle philosophy is an essential part of production for DESSO. This line of thought, developed by the German chemist Michael Braungart, is focused on reusing a product's raw materials. The essence is that products are developed with the underlying thought that they can also be taken apart again. The loose parts subsequently need to be able to be used as raw materials for new products, without losing any of their value.

"The Cradle to Cradle thought is now in an advanced stage within our organisation. Elements like waste separation, recycling, CO2 reduction and water purification have been fixed parts of our production process for years", Kranendijk states. The entire production process, including the suppliers' processes, must satisfy the conditions in order to realise a Cradle to Cradle product. An enormous job according to Kranendijk. "The time and effort we have devoted to this project has made us particularly proud of the fact that we have now produced a second tile."

Colour for a fresh effect
The 'Torso' tile is being produced in 60 different colours and can therefore very flexibly react to market needs. "The broad colour spectrum and the ease of the tile structure have allowed us to generate a fresh look which can easily be adjusted," according to Alexander Collot d'Escury, DESSO's Chief Commercial Officer. So no dark red carpets, but trendy colours combined with austere forms.
