In May 2007, after having been part of Amstrong World Industries, DESSO began operating independently once again. Today, DESSO products are produced at three locations in Europe, employing a dedicated workforce of about 1,000 people. As part of DESSO, the aviation department is successful in manufacturing custom-made Wilton woven carpets for airline companies worldwide. Its high-quality carpets meet the highest international market and regulatory standards. Its manufacturing process is certified for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, EN9100, from Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance UK, and DESSO operates its own vertically integrated production process in its factories in the Netherlands and Belgium. All stages of production – from wool washing, spinning, twisting and dyeing to weaving, finishing and packaging – are managed in-house, giving DESSO full flexibility and, crucially, the ability to monitor the quality throughout the process. For DESSO’s customers, this means they receive the same high quality all the time. Through its own R&D and testing laboratory, DESSO is continuously improving its carpets, looking for new ways to excel. Today, it offers its unique, low-weight carpet, which has been developed after intensive research involving all aspects of production in close cooperation with its partners in the airline industry. A weight saving of up to 25% on the current market standard can be achieved without compromising on product quality. This way DESSO can help airlines reduce the aircraft weight, resulting in fuel cost savings, and ‘greener flying’, contributing to a sustainable aviation industry.
Interchangeable designs
In addition to the high-performance qualities, the design possibilities are not limited by this innovative development. In fact, DESSO has created even more design opportunities by using a 3-frame construction. This gives the airline a huge advantage, because all existing carpet designs are interchangeable with DESSO’s new low-weight product, meaning no expensive restyling or refurbishing programmes. DESSO’s design office has built up extensive know-how in advising customers on designs and colour combinations to create a pleasant ambiance for their passengers.
